On Monday, Wharton City Council unanimously appointed Christy Gonzales as the next City of Wharton EMS Director.
“Well my size 6 shoe may not fill his size 14, but I am happy to step into them.”
When late EMS Director John Kowalik took ill, Gonzales stepped in as the city’s interim director.
No stranger to the role, Gonzales’ emergency medical service to the city spans well over a decade — 13 years and counting.
Outside of her EMT and AEMT positions with the department, Gonzales took on roles like shift supervisor and EMS supervisor.
She furthered her education and certification through the WCJC Paramedic program, graduating in 2017.
Gonzales was named the Assistant EMS Director and served under Kowalik before his passing.
Now as the newly appointed EMS Director, Gonzales told council members, she “only wishes to do her job and continue to be of service to the community.”
After the vote, Mayor Timothy Barker turned to Gonzales and said, “I know you will do a wonderful job and we’re happy to have you.”
Earlier that day, Wharton County Commissioners approved Gonzales to fill the county’s vacant position on the Southeast Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC).
This position was previously held by Kowalik as representation for Wharton County, and expires July 31, 2023.
In between the two meetings, Gonzales continued to navigate the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on one of the department’s ambulances.
It was light-heartedly stated that Gonzales will have big shoes to fill, referencing the late director’s towering stature.
Gonzales looked down at her feet and said, “Well my size 6 foot may not fill his size 14, but I am happy to step into them.”
Once the council meeting adjourned, council members shook hands with Gonzales and offered congratulations and appreciation.
Gonzales’ appointment went into immediate effect.
Publisher’s Note: Given the solemn circumstances surrounding the vacant position, I want to applaud Christy for her unwavering willingness and complete dependability to step in and step up. You are a treasure to the community and we thank you for your devotion and service. Congratulations, Christy!
