Update on May 15: Due to concerns about the weather, the WBR has announced a secondary plan for its opening ceremonies.
In the event of rainfall, the WBR will move its team introductions, cake auction and 50/50 raffle to the Boling Community Center in Iago. An announcement will be made closer to the event tomorrow.
Please look for the announcement on The County Gin’s Facebook page.
The Wharton Babe Ruth will host its opening ceremonies for the 2021 season this Sunday, May 16 and invites the community to come out in support.
The events will begin at noon, starting with the introductions of the 2021 WBR players and teams.
Following the introductions, the organization will auction off cakes provided by each team.
Yum! Cake. But the organization isn’t stopping there.
Members of the Wharton Independent School District Board of Trustees and administration will be recognized for their willingness to work and support the babe ruth league.
You heard that correctly.
WBR President Grady Smith told The County Gin, “It has been a little heated back and forth between us and the school board.”
Speaking to the deliberation and proposal of the WISD Facility Use Agreement, Smith says it’s time for both parties to move forward.
“We have reached an agreement and it’s time to move on to great things in Wharton,” he said. “We want to thank [them] for working with us and making our league great again.”
Smith hopes to make each day at the ballpark an opportunity for residents to come out and enjoy themselves.
“If you like to watch ball or just need to get out of the house, come on down to the ballpark,” he said. “We will have special guests throwing out the first pitches, and food and fun for the entire family. There is no charge for regular season game admission.”
Some of the items for sale at the concession stand are: hot dogs; Coca-Cola products; burgers and fries; and frito pies.
Oh, did we mention that you could enter to win cash for attending?
Smith and WBR members will also hold their opening day 50/50 raffle. That means with each ticket purchased, the jackpot grows.
At the end of the ceremonies, WBR will draw a winning ticket and that individual will walk away with half of the jackpot.
Sounds like fun, right?
Opening ceremonies start at noon on Sunday, May 16. Tell your spouse, mother or father, “Take me out to the ball game.”
