Update as of Monday, Feb. 15, 2021:
The Wharton Police Department (WPD) announced their investigation into the shooting incident pinned an alleged male juvenile as the shooter.
“[WPD] was able to develop and charge an alleged 16-year-old juvenile suspect with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection to the shooting,” WPD said.
While the suspect is not yet in custody, WPD said they are, “Working with the juvenile’s family to secure his arrest.”
Detectives said the shooting is believed to have taken place at one entrance to the Red River Apartment complex, located in the 1400 block of East Boling Highway.
While no believed motive has been announced at this point, WPD said they will provide updates as they occur.
Update as of Feb. 12, 2021:
The 22-year-old male has been identified as Jose Muñiz of Wharton.
A 22-year-old male has been transported to downtown Houston, following a reported shooting incident.
Original story reported on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2021:
At approximately 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, Wharton Police Department (WPD) received a call reporting a suspected gunshot victim.
Both police and EMS were dispatched to the residence, where it is believed the victim drove himself after being shot at another location.
WPD Detective Ariel Soltura told The County Gin, the victim’s wounds seemed to be non-life threatening and the location where the shooting occurred is yet to be determined.
Multiple calls from residents reporting to have heard gunshots have led detectives to believe the shooting took place near or in the area of the 1400 block of East Boling Highway in Wharton.
An investigation is underway and detectives will know more once interviewing the victim.
Soltura advised that there is no immediate public threat and it is likely the victim and the unidentified shooter knew one another.
