The Wharton County Sheriff’s Office has shut down two alleged gambling locations in Hungerford following a six-month investigation.
Two search warrants were executed simultaneously on Oct. 1 at the locations of 8122 Colorado Street and 7803 Colorado Street in Hungerford.
According to WCSO Sheriff Shannon Srubar, detectives have been working the case for approximately six months after receiving information that the locations were allegedly paying cash prizes, which violates state law.
A team of WCSO investigators, ERT team, an El Campo Police Department detective, a Wharton County Pct. 2 constable and a member of the Hungerford Volunteer Fire Department spent almost six hours collecting the machines, the sheriff said. They were transported to a secure location.
In the seizure, 59 machines and $13,886 in cash were seized. The items will be kept for safekeeping until a proper court proceeding takes place, the sheriff said.
Two arrests were made in connection with the alleged unlawful gambling operations. Mary Ann Carmona and Jo Ann Carmona, both of Wharton, were charged with gambling promotion, keeping a gambling place, possession of a gambling device and possession of gambling paraphernalia.
According to Srubar, the investigation is ongoing.
what a big deal anyway, I see game machines at every gas station and store around town. People love to gamble it their choices the sheriff need to go after drugs dealer out there not on these gamble places.
I agree. I go play at least three times a weeks, i go to relax myself after a tired day at work. I think the sheriff need to leave it alone, I have to drive to Houston to play if there no game room in Wharton. I like to play and it my choice.
I see a lots of elderly go play game they enjoy it, myself I don’t see an issue with game room. legalize it in Texas so the money stay here rather then go to Louisiana.
My parents go play too and they enjoy it. Why the police go after game room when most Texan go to Lake Charles and spend all the money there anyway.
